We live in a world which constantly seems to be increasing in pace, and in which people seem to be in an ever greater hurry. This has big implications for retailers, who increasingly need to increase their speed of service delivery in order to be competent. In this respect, mobile-based Point of Sale systems offer huge opportunities.

The prominence of mobile devices in our culture is indicative of this fast pace, of this need for people to cram as much into their spare time as possible. It thus seems natural for retailers to take advantage of mobile payment systems if at all possible. While smartphones are hugely popular in commercial terms, the release of the Apple iPad in 2010 began the ascent of the tablet computer. This convenient way to surf on the go has now been named by the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph as the fastest growing form of technology in human history. Given their popularity, it is obviously beneficial for a retailer to take advantage of this potentially huge market.

Here are some of the primary benefits for businesses of using tablet Point of Sale systems.

Lower Price and Investment

All businesses focus on…the bottom line. The initial investment on hardware and licenses is significantly less with tablet POS than a traditional payment system. This can make a massive difference in particular to new startups, with many businesses floundering every year – or even not being set-up in the first place – due to a lack of start-up capital.

The fact that tablet POS can be tied into email makes it possible to launch email campaigns very easily. You can engage customers in offers that actually benefit them; for example, in the case of restaurants it is perfectly possible to submit discounts and coupons to customers in order to attract them back to your eatery.

On a very basic level, tablet POS is quicker than other similar systems, and more convenient for the customers. This can then instantly translate into members of staff having more time free to work on other tasks within your business. Tablet POS is a great time saver, and one that can translate into a lot of labour hours invested in other important aspects of your company.

The nature of mobile platforms also makes them open to features which aren’t possible with other payment systems. Updates to software are made continually by tablet POS vendors, and improvements are thus available on a regular basis at no extra cost to the proprietor.

Cloud Access and Big Data Analysis

Cloud integration plays a big part in the success and growth of tablet based POS systems. While the benefits of this may not be immediately apparent, it is going to open up Big Data analysis, which could help you more accurately identify and target customer demographics. This element coupled with effective marketing can potentially make a massive positive difference to your business.

Ongoing Savings

Traditional POS systems are more expensive than tablet POS without a shadow of a doubt. A traditional POS system can cost as much as $50,000, but you can also expect to pay an annual software license fee, while most top quality vendors will also charge a early maintenance fee of around 20 percent for upgrades. And if you’re not happy with what the system offers, you’re pretty much stuck with it unless you decide to shell out another big investment on another system, thus losing your initial fee for your previous POS system. Tablet POS costs a fraction by comparison, and savings extend across the lifetime of the device. Monthly fees are much lower than for traditional POS, and can, of course, be cancelled at any time.

The advantages of tablet POS systems to businesses are quite clear and numerous, particularly if you’re a small-to-medium enterprise. In a world in which every competitive advantage counts, it is well worth looking into acquiring one.
