Delivering the digital wallet at the point of sale in Australia

Providing consumers with simple and efficient payment solutions, and adding value in the process, is central to PayPal’s product vision and brand promise. So it is with great excitement that I share news from Australia.

Today we’re announcing that four leading retailers will launch in-store payments with PayPal. Working in collaboration with point of sale technology companies, we will provide Australian consumers with a completely new way to pay in-store.

The Sonoma Bakery is one of the four retailers that we’re announcing today. Watch the video below to learn more about their story.

PayPal‘s card-less and cash-less payment option brings our vision for the digital wallet to Australian retail for the first time.

Using the app, customers will be able to check-in to the store. They can then place an order and pay using their PayPal account. The merchant is able to see the name and photo ID of checked-in customers via their point of sale terminal, which supports customer identification for security purposes.

The check-in functionality makes it possible for the merchant to provide personalized service to regular customers and reward them with loyalty programs. Retailers can connect with individual customers in a personal way and recognize repeat visitation and loyalty. Customers benefit from a convenient and quick payment option that saves them time and is aligned with their increasingly mobile lifestyle.

All of this is delivered via simple integration with existing point of sale solutions using the PayPal Here APIs. The technology instantly connects the retailer with millions of PayPal customers in Australia.

Mobile payments in-store end the reliance on static check-out terminals and provide retailers with new ways to save floor space, improve customer flow and enhance the overall shopping experience.

The flexible, quick and secure payment option saves time for customers, allowing them to access any funding source connected with their PayPal account. We’re making it easier than ever for Australians to pay any time, anywhere and any way they want.

Many people worked together to bring the in-store payments to market. I’d especially like to highlight MICROS, Island Pacific, Kounta and Vend who worked with us to deliver this innovation. In the coming weeks and months a number of leading hospitality and retail partners will be introducing the solution as well.

  • Guzman y Gomez, a top Mexican restaurant franchise (MICROS)
  • Glue, an Australian fashion retailer (Island Pacific)
  • Sonoma Bakery, a Sydney based artisan bakery (Kounta)
  • Crayons, a specialty education retailer (Vend)

This is a significant development for the local retail sector and another great milestone for PayPal in Australia as we bring the digital wallet into people’s everyday lives.
